Eras of Love
BY Julie Walton Garland, Third-Generation Owner of Walton’s Jewelry
As the third-generation owner of Walton’s Antique and Estate Jewelry, I’ve had the joy of seeing countless engagement rings, each with its unique story and style. Engagement rings aren’t just symbols of love; they’re also a window into history, carrying the artistry, culture and innovations of their time. At Walton’s Jewelry, we’ve spent over fifty years curating rings that carry these stories, and their histories never cease to amaze us.
The tradition of engagement rings dates back centuries, with diamonds gradually becoming a favored symbol of eternal love over time. Even before the rise of diamonds, ancient cultures used rings to represent commitment. The Egyptians exchanged simple bands of braided reeds, believing the circle symbolized eternity. They also placed these rings on the fourth finger of the left hand, a tradition born from the idea that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart.
By the Georgian Era (1714–1837), engagement rings became true works of art, characterized by intricate metalwork and romantic designs inspired by nature. Jewelers worked with early diamond cuts, crafting pieces that felt almost like miniature sculptures. Moving into the Victorian era, sentimentality took center stage. Rings were adorned with floral motifs, colorful gemstones, and even hidden messages, echoing the romance and grandeur of the time.
The turn of the 20th century brought fresh innovation. The Art Nouveau movement, emerging in France around 1890, embraced organic, flowing lines, while Edwardian jewelers turned to platinum, creating rings so delicate they resembled lace. These periods reflect a love of detail and craftsmanship that feels timeless.
Then came Art Deco, roaring in with bold geometric shapes and vibrant gemstones. These rings embodied the modern spirit of the 1920s, symbolizing freedom and individuality. Even during the Retro era, when materials were scarce due to World War II, jewelers found creative ways to make bold, glamorous designs using yellow gold and synthetic gems.
Every era leaves its mark on engagement rings, shaping their beauty and meaning. At Walton’s Jewelry, we believe these pieces are more than jewelry—they’re stories, waiting to become part of your own. Whether it’s an Edwardian masterpiece or a bold Art Deco treasure, every ring carries the magic of the past into your future.
