Whimsy & Wonder
By Anna Robertson Ham
Just a short drive from Williamson County lies a whimsical and enchanting retreat like no other: Ancient Lore Village. Located in Knoxville, this fantasy-themed boutique resort transports guests to a world where myth and legend come alive—making it the perfect getaway for anyone looking to experience a place where magic, adventure and tranquility coexist. The story of Ancient Lore Village began with a vision from founder Tom Boyd: to create a place where characters from different worlds could live in harmony and where goodness reigns supreme. That dream has now become a reality, and Ancient Lore Village is more than just a destination—it’s a living, breathing world of storytelling, community and unforgettable experiences.
For the lovers of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Ancient Lore Village brings to life the Shire—Middle Earth’s home for the Hobbits as depicted in the novel. With stone paths, rounded doorways and landscaping that envelops the structures, the village looks like a movie set. But it is truly real and not only the architecture but the people and activities are what bring it all to life. My husband, daughter and I experienced the enchantment firsthand during our recent visit to the village.
When we arrived, we were greeted with a tour by the local fairy, Helea. Her commitment to remaining in character around our daughter was endearing, making the magic set in from the very start. She showed us the dwellings for both Village Gardens and Elven Grove. The Village Gardens consists of seven charming cottages and serves as the heart of the village, where fireside gatherings take place, special celebrations and where guests can enjoy activities like axe throwing, archery, the Gremlin’s Gameyard and hiking. Elven Grove is the newest addition, with seven tree houses and two family houses. All the dwellings are rounded, encouraging people to come together in a circle and talk. The design elements are thoughtfully curated with a mindset of togetherness, natural beauty and little surprises—like hidden fairy doors and gnomes in hideaway cabinets. All accommodations are also package-based, allowing guests to enhance their stay with options like guided tours, immersive activities and delicious meals.
Speaking of delicious meals—we did not go hungry. Our dining took place at The Gathering Hall, which is situated at the top of the waterfall near the entrance to the resort and overlooks the Smoky Mountains. All meals are made from locally sourced ingredients and prepared in a family-style buffet for the earlier meals and our dinner being plated. We enjoyed breakfast, brunch and dinner there; every bite was fantastic. There is also a cash bar and gift shop connected to the Gathering Hall for guests to purchase snacks and mementos.
The staff at Ancient Lore Village were some of the friendliest we have encountered while traveling. Their hospitality and willingness to go out of their way was unmatched—like when a full plate of food suddenly appeared for our “hangry” daughter who was unwilling to eat her starter salad. Acts of attention and kindness like this were not lost for the duration of the stay. Everyone there wants you to embrace the overall goal of bringing people together in peace and harmony in a place where only genuine goodness exists.
Ancient Lore Village is more than just a place, it’s an experience. It’s where magic, imagination and folklore come to life and where every visitor can step into the world of myth and legend. Where everyone, child or adult, can embrace their inner whimsy and be welcomed. Whether you are there for a quick retreat, a special celebration or a fairytale wedding, Ancient Lore Village promises to deliver an experience unlike any other. So, reserve your stay… Magic and adventure await you.
